HOGLINE Hits the West Coast

Club member Rich Kretschmer tests the HOGLINE Swift

I had a chance to visit the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club last week on a visit to San Francisco and had a great time. The club relies on a number of arenas throughout the bay area and on this occasion, sadly, the matches had to be rescheduled because of a broken Zamboni. But the spirit of curling was strong with these folks. Most engage in long commutes either via public transit, or local roads, and it was clearly a disappointment to  travel all that way only to be turned away, but we made the most of it.

A large number went around the corner to an area bar to socialize and play a little indoor bocce. I must comment that the camaraderie that I have experienced in the midwest curling scene is alive and well on the west coast despite being far removed from the curling stronghold of the heartland.

I left a few brooms for the members to demo when they did get back on the ice and I’m happy to report that not only did they get out there and try them, but they send pictures and video to prove it.

I would recommend to anyone travelling through the area to stop by on a league night and hang out, it is a great time with great people. I know that I’ll be going back the next time I’m in town.

Big thanks to Jonathan, Dave, Kevin, and Dana for all your hospitality.

Good curling
